Studies in Sea Ice

Speaking with Trees

Greenland

The photos of Roberta Holden reveal a part of the world that is so foreign and difficult to comprehend, especially for those of us living in the southern hemisphere. Her series document trips through Arctic Ice and the lives of northern arctic communities. The self-relience of these people are evident and incredible as we see the hunting, resourcing and distribution of local life sources. How people live for generations on end in these lands is quite remarkable and says so much to our comparatively soft and ridiculous comforts of western society.

These photos would really do justice and speak in bigger volumes in print. Xavier Encinas has produced a postcard box set for Studies in Ice. http://www.xavierencinas.com/#134926/Studies-in-Sea-Ice

Studio Glithero

I just came across a the Blueware Collection by Studio Glithero. These are simple vases that have images of plants implanted on the surface through photosensitive chemicals. The result is rather simple but beautiful silhouettes on the case.

I also quite liked the Les French furniture pieces - each hand-made through a process of bronze casting string-bound bamboo sticks for the frame, and layered gumpaper over lightweight frame for the drawer section. Lots of character and honesty.
Make sure to check out their other works and keep track of new ones.

Daytrotter

Head over to Daytrotter to find great musicians and free tracks. Folk/indie flavour mostly. “One band a day, every day, 28 Daytrotter Session songs each week”
Illustrations to go with each artist are also brilliant.

David Maisel :: Photography

David Maisel has an incredible body of work, in particular, the aerial photographs of environmentally impacted landscapes. It’s quite incredible to see from such a large perspective the effect our hands have on the land. Visit his site to see the whole collection.
